1.Data Collection and Analysis

Content and Readability

We collected data from PocketPal's readers and compared the content between PocketPal and other printing production books to identify the most needed information for PocketPal's readers.

Therefore, we could eliminate repetitive and unnecessary information from Pocket Pal to make room for visual elements and reduce the weight of the book.

Pricing

We compared the prices of Pocket Pal with the prices of other printing production books and found that Pocket Pal is generally more affordable than other printing production books. However, it lacks visual elements to explain the printing processes. While Pocket Pal and other printing production books contain extensive text-based information, the competitors often offer more up-to-date and well-explained content.

Therefore, even when other books are slightly more expensive than Pocket Pal, customers may still prefer other printing production books.

The expectation of Sylvamo

Our client expected to reduce the price of Pocket Pal so that their readers could have the cheaper printing production book from the market but a valuable book at the same time. To help fulfill our client's goals, we improve and enhance Pocket Pal's design and user experiences.

Competitors

We researched the general sizes of small books to compare Pocket Pal’s design, and we discovered the design of Pocket Pal wasn’t handy, which didn’t serve the design concept of Pocketpal.

Therefore, the design teams decided to change the size of the Pocket Pal to make it easy to carry but maintain a small size as the specialty of PocketPal.

Potentials of Pocket Pal

We discovered that most printing production books are very large and heavy, making PocketPal stand out as a small toolbook. However, even though Pocket Pal looks more diminutive than their competitors, based on the current design of Pocket Pal, the other printing production books are still more user-friendly than Pocket Pal.

2. Summarized Pocket Pal’s Content

As the book had too much information, our content team summarized the content of Pocket Pal. We could understand the organization and structure of PocketPal easily, and it could be more accessible to identify the problems as well. It could also assist Graphic designers in developing their design processes.

3. Content Reorganization

1. Eliminated outdated and unnecessary information:

The 21st edition Pocket Pal includes printing history and outdated printing methods, which weren’t helpful information for graphic designers. So, the content removed the information and reorganized the content.

2. Created a reader guide and introduction pages for each chapter:

Introduction Pages: The 21st Pocket Pal didn't have an introduction to start each chapter, leaving readers without a clear idea of what they could expect from each chapter. I wrote introductions for each chapter, which could establish better reading experiences and connections with the readers.

Reader Guide: I created a reader guide so that readers could understand the new organization of the book and the location of the information in the book.

4. Editing

Our content team edited the content of Pocket Pal, including the grammar and spelling. Here are the examples:

Result:

After digesting the data, the design and content teams devised the solution for the 21st Pocket Pal. Sylvamo used our content development and new design to develop the 22nd Pocket Pal.
